AHIMA Releases mHealth App Consumer Guide

The American Health Information Management Association has released a guide designed to educate consumers about the unregulated mHealth marketplace and how to responsibly choose mHealth apps.

Mobile Health Apps 101: A Primer for Consumers educates consumers on evaluating mHealth apps, with emphasis on privacy and the management of personal information.

Among the listed criteria is whether the patients’ doctor has recommended the app. With the mHealth marketplace still largely disconnected from clinical care, it is a strong sign to see consumer guide setting an expectation with patients that their doctors could be recommending mhealth apps.

The remainder of the guide focuses in on protecting patient privacy while using technology that can leave patient information vulnerable to unscrupulous app developers.
