AHIP Introduces New Healthcare Spending App

America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) president and CEO Karen Ignagni announces that they have launched a new iPad app, called US Health Care Spending 101, which consolidates various sources of healthcare spending data and presents the information within a single streamlined user interface.

The application draws on nearly 50 years of trended data housed in various federal databases including the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

"The national healthcare cost debate needs to be based on real data about what is driving the rise in health care spending. This new app provides policymakers and stakeholders with one-stop-shopping for health care cost data," CEO Karen Ignagni.

The new app presents the data through a menu of predetermined graphs and charts that neatly displays various cost inflation trends over time but does not necessarily aid in exploring or identifying underlying root causes, so the likelihood that it is ever used for its intended purpose of  “steering policymakers and stakeholders decisions” is doubtful.

The more obvious result of AHIP’s decision to develop this app is the flood of positive publicity and press coverage that its unveiling has generated, which will undoubtedly help to position the insurance industry as being on the right side of the healthcare spending discussion in the public eye. Well played AHIP, well played, indeed.
