BlackBerry 10 will be the first RIM product release since the highly publicized resignation of co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Douglas Fregin in January, and 30 percent staff cuts in June. The company originally promised its client base that BlackBerry 10 would be released by the end of 2012, but revised that goal in June (coincidence?) to a release date of Q1 2013.

Stage 2 Patient Engagement Not Set in Stone

CMS official Travis Broome announces that Meaningful Use Stage 2 patient engagement requirements may be adjustable or altogether removed. Clarifying his statement via Twitter, Mr. Broome went on to say that any adjustment would be triggered only by a widespread failure to meet the benchmark.

The intent behind setting patient engagement benchmarks as a requirement is to promote genuine outreach efforts by healthcare organizations instead of careless patient portal implementations with a focus on short-term cost rather than long-term value. However, CMS officials are aware that there is heightened concern over a provision that many providers say they cannot personally control.

Telehealth Hailed at NHS World Stroke Day Event

For World Stroke Day, the NHS is celebrating a life-saving application of traditional telehealth technology it has dubbed “TeleStroke.” With stroke, best practices require administration of a clot busting agent within 4.5 hours of the onset of symptoms for patients to have the best possible prognosis. Before the medication can be administered, a formal diagnosis must be made, and so every minute counts for an undiagnosed stroke patient.

In an effort to reduce the time between the onset of symptoms and a final diagnosis,  the NHS has instituted TeleStroke technology at two remote trusts. TeleStroke provides these trusts with 24-hour on-call stroke specialists available to aid in diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients.
