Comprehend Raises $8.4 Million for Clinical Insight Tools To Help Startups

Silicon Valley-based Comprehend has announced an $8.4 million first round led by prestigious venture firm Sequoia Capital. The startup is developing a data analysis tools to help companies working in the premarket medical device stage gather the data they need to submit for FDA approval.

While the company is initially focusing on medical device manufacturers in the US, the platform could likely be expanded to support UK-based companies applying for regulatory approval from the National Health Services.

Comprehend is a 2010 Y Combinator graduate. Prior to that, CEO Rick Morrison developed clinical analytics tools used by both the FDA and pharmaceutical companies. CTO Jud Gardner is an expert on machine learning. The company will use the new funds to develop a HIPAA compliant version of their tools, and to develop interface options to mine clinical information from EHR databases.
