San Francisco-based ConsultingMD closes a $10 million Series A round led by veteran health IT venture capital firm Venrock. The funding comes on top of a $1 million seed round raised in 2012. The startup was co-founded by Reputation.com founder Owen Trip and Lawrence Hoffmann, MD, the chief of interventional radiology at Stanford Hospital.

ConsultingMD is building on the work of HealthTap and ZocDoc in trying to create an online clinic that allows patients to search for doctors and solicit second opinions. The site claims to have a physician population made up of the top 0.1 percent of experts in each field, who tend to be chiefs or chairs at major medical research universities.

The company will market the service directly to consumers at $3,750 per case. While the cost represents a barrier to wider adoption, the service will also be marketed to companies to help employees get access to elite clinical consultations and thus improved outcomes.

ConsultingMD will use the new funds to market to companies that share this vision.
