The FDA has cleared a mobile vision test developed by Vital Arts and Science Inc. The app, which is not intended to replace a trip to the doctor, allows patients with degenerative visual conditions to monitor their condition at home.

“myVisionTest enables patients to regularly assess their vision function. The device stores test results, tracks disease progression and automatically alerts a healthcare provider if it suspects significant deterioration of visual function in the patient.” – Yoni Heisler, reporter withTUAV.

The app, called myVisionTest, has only been approved for use on the iPhone 4S. Consequently, it will not be available on the app store and the company is in talks with Apple to negotiate it being pre-loaded on 4S devices. Clearance is pending for approval on other devices.
