Google Glass Has Entered the OR

Surgeon, TEDx veteran, and mHealth innovator Rafael Grossman, MD, FACS blogs about his experience live streaming from the operating room via Google Glass. This is his most recent post in a series he has been writing describing the innovative disruptor that Google Glass represents for healthcare and specifically surgeons.

Grossman outlined in detail the steps taken to ensure privacy and protection of PHI. Next he performed a gastrostomy, the insertion of a feeding tube, while broadcasting the procedure in a Google Hangout.

He goes on to make a compelling case for the use of live streaming video in surgical cases, suggesting that intra-operative consultations with remote experts would be more accessible and that surgical training and remote medical education in general could benefit.
