Google CEO Larry Page announces the launch of Calico, a new company focused on technological advancements in the health and wellness space. Google is calling it one of their long shot projects, on par with the self-driving car. The company will be led by former Genentech CEO and current Apple chairman Arthur Levinson. Levinson is also a founding investor in the business.

“For too many of our friends and family, life has been cut short or the quality of their life is too often lacking. Art is one of the crazy ones who thinks it doesn’t have to be this way. There is no one better suited to lead this mission and I am excited to see the results.” – Tim Cook, CEO of Apple

The company will research the basic biological mechanisms that contribute to the aging process, and then look for ways of stalling the process, ultimately leading to anti-aging innovations with the potential to extend life expectancy.

“Illness and aging affect all our families. With some longer term, moonshot thinking around healthcare and biotechnology, I believe we can improve millions of lives.” – Larry Paige, CEO of Google

Calico may enter the pharmaceutical market as part of the effort, but early-stage efforts will all revolve around research. Google is looking at the project as a long-term engagement.
