Health IT and Childhood Obesity

image

Childhood is a big and growing problem. It’s one of the reasons I’m really interested in devices and services like Sqord or Zamzee that promote kids to get off their butts and move around. A review article published in Pediatrics last month found that health IT can have a positive impact on childhood health and obesity.

The studies the authors included in the review aren’t very glamorous, not cool devices or apps. The most relevant findings for this blog were that telemedicine was as effective as in-person counseling at reducing BMI and that text messaging and phone support were associated with weight loss maintenance.

None of this seems like rocket science,  but it’s still in the most prestigious journal in the field of pediatrics. I’d be really excited to see studies of some of the newer devices and programs that use some newer technologies.
