Insurance Comparison Index Rates Patient Engagement Programs As HIE Deadline Nears

Seattle, WA-based EveryMove introduces the EveryMove 100 Health Insurance Index, a list of regional and national insurance companies ranked based on patient engagement and outreach efforts. The list comes as the nation draws nearer to the October 1 deadline for states to go live with commercial health insurance exchanges.

"We’re about to witness a tectonic shift in the health insurance industry. Millions of consumers will soon be buying health insurance, either directly or through exchanges, for the first time. In a competitive market, they’re going to expect health insurers to differentiate themselves on more than just price and government-mandated minimum features.” Russell Benaroya, CEO of EveryMove.

The exchanges help consumers compare insurance plans and add an element of competition to a market that has traditionally catered to employers, rather than directly to customers. The influx of consumers, and addition of health insurance exchanges, is expected to create a climate of change in the insurance industry as companies and patient engagement offerings that might help differentiate themselves.

To create the insurance index, researchers evaluated mobile apps, social media utilization, incentive programs to motivate health habits, and engagement with the community. Interestingly, cost was not included as a metric, so the list only measures the scope of the plans engagement initiatives, and does not attempt to measure overall value.

Capital District Physicians’ Health Plan took first place. Capital is a New York-based insurance company. It offers Android, iOS, Windows, and even BlackBerry apps, an online symptom checker, and a wellness incentive program. Rounding out the top ten were:

1. Capital District Physicians’ Health Plan

3. Independence Blue Cross

4. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois

5. Humana

7. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina
