iPhone App Helps Diagnose Atrial Fibrillation

AliveCor, an iPhone app and iPhone compatible device that provides a low-cost mobile ECG heart monitor, has proven itself by correctly diagnosing atrial fibrillation 95 percent of the time. Researchers compared diagnostic interpretation of the app with that of a 12-lead ECG interpreted by a cardiologist.

Atrial fibrillation, or an irregular heart beat, is often an asymptomatic condition but correlates with a high risk of stroke.

The app has not yet been approved by the FDA for US sale, but could potentially act as a screening tool for identifying high-risk stroke patients. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the US.
