Maven Launches Digital Clinic For Women on $2.2 Million Seed Funding

New York-based digital health startup Maven launched a beta-version of what it’s calling a digital clinic for women. The company was founded by Kate Ryder, a former VC from Index Ventures, who recognized the need for a digital health app dedicated to women’s health and wellness, and so left her job and pursued the idea full time. Maven closed a $2.2 seed from a laundry list of investors, including Great Oaks Venture Captial, BoxGroup, F Cubed, as well as a number of angel investors, including WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg and former AOL executive Susan Lyne.

Maven approached the “digital clinic” concept by merging traditional telehealth services with more general Q&A features, similar to what HealthTap is doing. The platform is also borrowing a page from ZocDoc’s business plan by allowing users to search for new doctors and book appointments over the app. Though others, like Doctors On Demand, HealthTap, and ZocDoc, have already established a strong presence in their respective markets, no one has brought these features together under a single platform and then targeted it exclusively toward women. In doing so, Maven is piloting a genuinely new digital health concept. The company is also differentiating itself from the pack with its price point. Maven will price telehealth visits at just $18 per visit, far lower than industry average.

Ryder is now leading a company of ten as she paves the way through final design decisions and moves into her soft launch. The apps main strategy is going to be targeting pregnant women and then retaining them indefinitely by providing post-partum support and services. “We found a particularly strong need around prenatal and postpartum care, as well as childcare or pulling long hours at the office,” she says. Eventually, Ryder hopes to expand the app to support a larger target market, and is currently testing ideas that she hopes will connect with teenage girls.
