The Mayo Clinic has launched a developers challenge aimed at spurring new innovations in digital health. Called the Think Big Challenge, the project is backed by a total of $100,000 in prizes and is divided into two main categories. The first will focus on promoting healthy living, while the second will be geared toward helping patients manage chronic conditions more effectively. Teams will have the summer to prepare their designs, and finalists will compete before a live audience at Mayo Clinic’s Transform 2015 conference on October 1, where a winner will be selected from each category. Winners will take home $50,000 and will receive product development support from Mayo Clinic experts for a year.

The first challenge is soliciting innovations that will help people maintain a healthy lifestyle and support goal setting toward that end. The category is soliciting ideas from a wide variety of innovations, including applications that would: help people increase nutritional awareness and maintain healthy diets, remotely monitor populations for key clinical risk factors, increase daily exercise levels, encourage smoking cessation, help people struggling with obesity, and support people working to reduce excessive alcohol consumption. This category is also interested in applications that would create local networks of health coaches to support a healthier community.

The second challenge focuses on chronic disease management. Applications submitted in this category will focus on improving health literacy, using existing health data in novel ways to combat chronic diseases, improving communication and coordination across patients and the care team, and incentivized behavior modification. The challenge asks developers to consider “What is needed to put the patient in the driver’s seat?”

Applications are now open, and remain open until August 15 at noon. Over the next 10 days, judges will select a group of semi-finalists who will have the remainder of the summer to continue working on their designs in preparation for the October 1 finalist competition.
