A recent Journal of Medical Internet Research study concludes that mobile apps have the potential to influence end user physical activity. Researchers from the University of Illinois were the first to study the use of mobile devices to influence physical activity. The study highlights the potential of mhealth strategies in efforts to engage patients physically.

“Theoretically grounded behavior change interventions that recognize and act on the potential of smartphone technology could provide investigators with an effective tool for increasing physical activity.” – Edward McAuley, PhD, University of Illinois.

The researchers analyzed 11 unique studies spanning more than 1300 individual end users in an effort to extract behavioral change interventions derived from regular use of mobile health apps.
