Mobile STD Test Delivers Lab Quality Results

Researchers at the Columbia University Department of Biomedical Engineering publish the test results of a low-cost mobile device that has proven capable of testing for HIV, hepatitis, and several other sexually transmitted infections with a diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of 100 percent and 99 percent, respectively.

The device outperformed all available rapid tests and is capable of testing whole blood, serum, or plasma samples. It successfully picked up weakly positive samples that were missed by some existing rapid tests, equaling the accuracy of a commercial lab. The device is also capable of transmitting results to a national database or patient health record system.

The breakthrough represents a major step forward for the global fight against AIDS, where early detection is often impossible due to a lack of resources in rural settings.
