The New York eHealth Collaborative announces the winners of its Patient Portal for New Yorkers Design Challenge that was launched in January in an effort to solicit design ideas for a statewide patient portal to be developed later this year.

The first-place winner of the contest was Mana Health, whose portal includes secure e-mail communication with providers, an audit trail of patient chart accesses, and a clean and intuitive layout. The design firm will take home a $15,000 first-place prize. iHealthNY took second place and a $10,000 prize, while MyHealthProfile brought home third place and a $5,000 prize

The patient portal prototypes will be used to create a single, statewide patient portal for New Yorkers that will be connected to New York’s newly formed HIE, the Statewide Health Information Network of New York, known casually as SHINY.

The New York eHealth Collaborative has modeled its patient portal project after the BlueButton initiative pioneered by the Department of Veterans Affairs. The portal will be an opt-in resource for New Yorkers to communicate with providers as well as access and share protected health information.
