San Mateo, Calif.-based digital health startup PokitDok has raised a $34 million Series B funding round that it will use to ramp up sales, marketing, and development of a digital health API platform that it has been developing since its 2011 launch. The new funding follows a $4.3 million Series A round raised in June 2013, and brings the company’s total funding level to $46.2 million.

PokitDok is building its company around the idea that the booming digital health industry needs a well-rounded suite of custom, industry-specific developer tools to help entrepreneurs realize their goals. To achieve this, PokitDok has forged partnerships with hundreds of key players in the industry and has created a suite of centralized APIs to help startups interact with established players in the space without having to form business relationships and develop interfaces on their own.

PokitDok’s API platform provides startups with a number of plug-and-play features. The company’s APIs are able to manage referrals, eligibility checks, claims submissions, and authorizations. Apps can also offer provider searches, patient-specific co-pay and deductible checks, online scheduling, and estimated procedure prices. In the last two years, the company has established connections with 300 insurers to help entrepreneurs scale geographically with minimal effort on the business relationship side.

The concept has struck a chord with both emerging and established digital health companies. Since its launch, PokitDok has attracted some major names in the healthcare industry, including tablet-based patient registration startup PracticeSense, and telehealth giant Doctor on Demand. The company also markets its APIs to large provider groups, health systems, and payers.

Now, with $34 million in fresh funding, PokitDot reports that it will ramp up its development efforts to further expand API offerings, as well as bolster its sales and marketing offices.
