Palo Alto-based Gamgee, a mobile health startup led by former Epocrates chief technology officer Bob Quinn, raises $2 million, according to a recent SEC filing. The company has no website, but Quinn’s Linkedin profile offers some explanation:

Funded by Khosla Ventures, I am building an exciting new mobile healthcare company. Near-term, our goal is to get a very helpful mobile healthcare app used by millions of people who are chronically ill or headed that way. We are confident that we know how to do this. Long-term, we will change the way people get their healthcare questions answered.

The description goes on to say that the company is funded and looking for expertise in mobile app design, product management, machine learning, and natural language processing.

The company credits J.R.R. Tolkien’s character Samwise Gamgee, loyal sidekick to Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, as the inspiration for its corporate name.

The SEC filing lists Quinn and Khosla Ventures founder Vinod Khosla as directors at the company. Prior to starting Gamgee at the beginning of 2013, Bob Quinn worked at Khosla Ventures for several months as an entrepreneur in residence.
