Telemedicine and Mobile Health Intersect at Miami Children’s Hospital

InformationWeek profiles advancements Miami Children’s Hospital is making in its telemedicine initiative. The program, which launched in 2012, has grown into a three-tiered global outreach effort overseen from a state-of-the-art $2 million telemedicine command center, bringing pediatric specialist care to patients as far away as Ecuador and the Ukraine.

Children’s is tackling their telemedicine program through three independent outreach efforts. The first is a mobile app that facilitates cash-based telemedicine consultations with general pediatricians or specialists. Parents can download the app, request an appointment, process a payment, and connect with a Miami Children’s physician. A separate physician app allows doctors to log into the platform, chose a patient from the virtual waiting room, and conduct their tele-visit.

The app integrates with Miami Children’s Cerner EHR where care can be documented and medical histories can be accessed. Miami is charging $30 per consultation for a general pediatrician consultation, and $50 per consultation for a specialist consultation.

The second track of Miami Children’s telemedicine program is conducted through virtual conferencing carts deployed to hospitals around the world. The carts connect to the Miami Children’s telemedicine command center where physicians can assist local clinicians in evaluating patients. Children’s licenses the carts to hospitals for $1,000 per year and then charges $100 per hour for consultation services.

The last telehealth program Miami Children’s has spearheaded is a collaborative effort with HealthSpot, a medical kiosk producer. The partnership is working to bring medical care to shopping centers and other retail environments. HealthSpot’s kiosks are equipped with thermometers, stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, and otoscopes that are all virtually connected to a  physician in the Miami Children’s command center. Miami Children expects to deploy their first kiosk this month.
