Verizon has released an update on an initiative spearheaded last fall aimed at implementing mHealth technologies to assist needy communities in and around the San Diego area.

Through a grant program, Verizon funded a telemedicine program for La Maestra Community Health Center last fall. The programs goal was to help children in the neediest communities gain access to both dentists and doctors through a mHealth van that would make rounds in remote and needy communities.

La Maestra has announced that the $90,000 grant provided by Verizon has been used to outfit a van with the latest telehealth equipment to transform it into a mobile clinic for the region. The van will now be used to perform outreach activities at schools, housing complexes, retail shopping areas, and community events.

Verizon has been active in the mHealth market since late 2011 when it partnered with WellPoint to demonstrate remote-monitoring platforms at the mHealth Summit. At this year’s CES tradeshow, Verizon announced its Powerful Awards Campaign to promote innovation within key sectors, with a $1 million prize allocated to spur health IT innovation.
