Transparency Market Research concludes that the global mHealth market will grow to an estimated $10.2 billion by 2018. This is more than seven times higher than the current market value of $1.3 billion. Another market study published this week concludes that the wearable technology market will grow to $5.8 billion by 2018. The market is currently valued at only $750 million. Both markets are expecting 40 percent year-over-year growth. It’s a good sector to consider if your entrepreneurial spirit is calling.

Travis summarizes the news coming out of this years CES tradeshow and gives a great overview of his favorite new activity trackers. He also comments on some other noteworthy devices, including the HAPIfork (seen above). HAPIfork is a weight-loss tool that vibrates if you are eating too fast.  He remarks, and I wholeheartedly agree, that it would be a perfect device for children if they could make it vibrate or light up to tell my easily distracted kids that it was time to take another bite. Apparently his kids, like mine, can turn dinner into an hours-long affair if they aren’t coaxed along.

The Quantified Self Movement: Surveillance or Mindful Living

Vanity Fair interviews quantified self organizer Steven Dean, pictured above, on the growing Quantified Self movement and why outsiders should view it as a liberating life choice rather than a self-imposed Orwellian surveillance program.

The Pew Research Center publishes its 2013 Health Online survey. The survey measures the use of the Internet as a diagnostic tool by consumers. The 2013 findings revealed that:

  • 35 percent of US adults say they went online specifically to try and figure out what medical condition they had.
  • Of those who used the Internet to diagnose a condition, 53 percent say they followed up with a clinician to discuss their suspicions.
  • 41 percent say that a clinician confirmed their suspected diagnosis.
  • Minorities led the mHealth growth, with African Americans and Latinos being most likely to search for health information on a cell phone.

Blueprint Health welcomes their new class of eleven startups to the Soho-based accelerator where they will spend the next 3 months building their businesses under the mentorship of some of the industries top brass. This year, as an added component, the startups will have the opportunity to work with executives from Humana, Verizon, and Aetna to refine their business model. In addition to mentorship and guidance, the startups will all receive $20,000 in seed capital, free office space, and additional perks valued in excess of $50,000. I posted an overview of startups that will make up the new class earlier this week.

HIMSS planning is in full swing across HIStalk. If you’re planning to make the trek to New Orleans this year,  I hope you’ll check in with us from the floor.
