White House Announces $100 Million BRAIN Initiative

President Obama announces a new research program modeled after the Human Genome Project that will attempt to map and further the understanding of the human brain. The hope is that the research will uncover better ways to treat or prevent brain disorders like Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, autism, epilepsy, and traumatic brain injury.

The BRAIN Initiative – short for Brian Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies – is one segment of the President’s call for strong investments in research and development to fuel innovation. The program has been funded to the tune of $100 million, supported by the National Institutes of Health, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and the National Science Foundation.

Private research foundations such as the Allen Institute for Brain Science and the Kavli Foundation have committed more than $60 million in additional funding cumulatively to help fund the project.
