ZocDoc and CareCloud Team Up to Improve Patient Scheduling

Ambulatory EHR vendor CareCloud has announced a new partnership with ZocDoc that will allow patients across the country to book appointments with CareCloud physician practices through ZocDoc’s online platform. Launched in 2007, ZocDoc is an online scheduling service where patients can search for doctors in their area, read reviews written by other patients, and book appointments all for free. The startup originated in Manhattan, but has spread to more than 1,500 cities since its launch.

With an expected 30 million new patients entering the healthcare system through the Affordable Care Act, ZocDoc is working overtime to make sure that once those patients have their health insurance arranged, there is an easy, streamlined website available for them to come search for a physician, book an appointment, and begin receiving healthcare services. Currently, ZocDoc nets 2.5 million users per month and is adding to that by expanding US markets, and adding interoperability options and service options to lure physicians into the ZocDoc ecosystem.

"Everything we do relates to the interaction between patient and doctor. That’s our sweet spot, that’s where all our innovation should go." – Cyrus Massoumi, Founder ZocDoc

ZocDoc’s services are free for patients, but physician practices pay a subscription fee to for the scheduling services. The company’s new partnership will deliver CareCloud’s 3,700 physician practices as potential new customers.

For CareCloud the partnership comes just on the heels of another high profile partnership announcements with Box, a HIPAA-compliant file sharing platform that is trying to disrupt the traditional paper faxing process in healthcare. The partnership was announced during the Health 2.0 conference earlier this month. CareCloud envisions using the file-sharing features to provide physicians a way of sending patient information not only to other providers and clinics, but also to patients themselves.

Officially launching in 2010, CareCloud has come into its own this year and is taking the Ambulatory EHR market by storm. Raising nearly $30 million in its series B round, and growing its user base to 3,700 physicians across 47 states, CareCloud is one of the fastest growing Ambulatory EHR vendors on the market. The company recently reported that it has closed 15 consecutive quarters of triple-digit revenue growth, resulting in 440 new customers signing on to the platform this year.

The startup hasn’t gone unnoticed by industry heavyweights. AthenaHealth CEO Jonathan Bush tweeted his admiration for the growing company in 2011, back when it was only bringing in an annual $8 million in revenue. Things haven’t stayed so friendly in the years since. In 2013, CareCloud opened a new office in Athena’s back yard, began recruiting AtheanHealth VPs, and is now the defendant in a patent infringement lawsuit filed by Athenahealth over practice management functionality that Athena owns decade-old patents too.
